Côte d’Ivoire - Alloco

Fried plantains with a delicious red sauce

Aneri's note: Guess what, I’ve been to Côte d’Ivoire! It is where the African Development Bank is headquartered, in the city of Abidjan. Compared to my experience in East Africa, I was surprised to see how developed of a city it is, full of skyscrapers and flyovers. I didn’t get much time to sightsee, but picked up a couple gorgeous bronze art pieces.

Alloco

Difficulty level (1-10): 10

Alloco is a popular street food in Côte d’Ivoire! Fried plantains are delish, but REALLY hard to get right. That's why I said 10, unless you are a frying pro (or just happen to have a fancy air fryer), this is difficult to get right. Most of my plantains burnt to a crisp. The sauce however is very easy and SO delicious! I used the leftover sauce for a nice pasta sauce the next evening.

Ingredients

Plantains - 2

Tomatoes - 4, diced

Garlic - 3 cloves, minced

Onion - 1/2, minced

Parsley - 1/2 tsp

Green bell pepper - 1/4

Black pepper - 1/2 tsp

Salt - to taste

Oil - 2 cups

1. Cut plantains in small pieces

2. Pour oil in a wok and heat it up

3. Add plantains to the oil and wait until golden

4. Remove and put in sieve to drain

5. Tomato sauce: add tomatoes, garlic, pepper and blend in a blender. Add parsley, black pepper, and salt. Put into a pot and heat up until water is evaporated. Add 1 tb of oil. Cook for another 3 min.

6. Serve plantains with the sauce!
